Oh, George! At 43, no longer a Boy. The years have not been kind. A failed come-back, a failed Broadway musical, and now we hear he’s "the hottest DJ in New York " (according to a fan site.)
All of which have made Boy George a delightfully nasty fount of venom and gossip.
The favorite target for his usually fair but withering edicts are fellow pop stars, particularly those who have had longer, steadier times in the sun. Elton John, for instance, had to quietly send out mutual friends to tell the Boy to please shut the fuck up after George took him apart in a recent interview. "You’re making a fool of yourself," George was told. "And Elton is offended."
That, of course, changed nothing; Boy George is hawking a new autobiography, Straight (available in the U.K. only). While Sir Elton (who like many a porn actress can never take a photo with his mouth closed, right) has two major musicals in the wings: Billy Elliot, based on the film about the boy who wanted to be a ballet dancer, and The Vampire Lestat, a (hopefully homoerotic) musical of Ann Rice’s homoerotic novel about a rock-star vampire. Such Big Time popularity as Elton enjoys is especially irksome to the proudly anti-mainstream Karma Chameleon.

AND I AGREE THAT MADONNA IS A CASHREGISTER, SHE DOESN’T TIP ANYONE, AND HER MATERIAL GIRL SONG SUMS HER UP. ELTON JOHN IS GREAT, AND I LOVE HIS WORK, BUT GEORGE IS UNIQUE, AND I THINK HE HAS THE MUSICAL ABILITY TO SING ANY TYPE OF MUSIC, HE IS VERY TALENTED AND UNIQUE. AND NOT TO MENTION THE BESTLOOKING MAN IN THE WORLD, WITH AND WITHOUT MAKEUP.
I’ve always thought George is very talented, unique and creative as well as being a great spokesperson for gay issues. But I don’t agree with him putting down other artists. I think it’s sad someone as talented as he is has to stoop to this level to get his name in the news. I think George should try making another record and doing live dates, and stop bitching at everyone.
George is a talented singer/songwriter/performer/ author/producer/playwrite/designer/ photographer/DJ … the list goes on, his mouth (always honest) gets him more attention than these accolades, he is never far wrong in his criticism of other artists, take Mrs Elton he thinks he’s Queen of England, when in fact he is just a Queen and over fed at that he looks like a prize pig at a county fare! I’m kind of split in my feelings here. Because I’m a fan of George and all his music and the Twin, but I’m also a fan of Madonna, George Michael and Elton and the other artists he criticizes. I don’t want to put down George in any way, but I don’t think those other artists should be put down either. I like George, but I have to question the intelligence level of some of his fans who post on here. What is the point of calling other artists names? Elton is outspoken, overweight, and gay just like George. How can you criticize Elton for his weight when Boy George is just as if not more overweight? Some people are overweight due to genetics etc. and it is not their fault. I never heard Elton say anything bad about George, until after George started attacking him. I think it’s a case of George and some of his fans being able to dish it out but not being able to take it.
When Boy George first became famous with Culture Club, he did not admit to being gay, he claimed he has sex with women and men and was “bisexual”, and meanwhile behind the scenes he was having sex with his drummer. So he was not always forthcoming about his sexual orientation. I think some people on here as well as George need to be more compassionate.

I agree 100% with you about Madonna. Everyone criticizes her as you say but they all know her music. I never heard her say anything personally against gays. I don’t know about Kaballah, but I’m Jewish and most people misinterpret Leviticus about homosexuality. It isn’t against contemporary romantic relationships between two men, it has to be read in the context of the time. It had to do with male prostitutes in the temple and pagan sexual rituals of the time, not two men loving each other today.
Madonna said in the new Vouge that George was mean to her in 1982 when she first met him and he’s still mean to her. I think Geogre should stop being mean to her. Being mean to people leads to very bad karma. George, the origingal Karma Chameleon should know about that.
Am I the only person who finds it ironic that Boy George faults George Michael for not being openly gay (in the beginning of his career? For years, Boy George did not exactly openly refer to himself as a gay man. He always referred to heterosexuality as being “fine”. Do not hate others for being cautious because that is exactly what he was……..Ironic, huh?

He is jealous that George Michael has had greater success as a solo artist and more critical respect than Boy George does.
I’ve never seen George dj. But usually when I go to clubs, I just go to enjoy the dance music and hang out with my friends. I don’t expect the dj to look at me or talk to me personally. I think people who complain about Boy George not looking at them are acting like it’s a concert, but it’s not. Maybe, he just wants to be treated like any other dj, not as Boy George the celebrity.
I think George Michael had the right to conceal his sexuality, if that was what he wanted, that is one thing I do not agree with Boy George on, he outs people, it is their business, and if they want to stay silent then it is their choice, George would not have liked being outed (as if everyone didn’t know already) as he does to others.

Well, I wouldn’t say Boy George was closeted, but he didn’t say he was gay either. Of course, people knew he was probably gay, but he said he was bisexual. George Michael never told anyone he was gay, but he didn’t say he was straight, either. He just kept his sexuality to himself. So, there’s no difference, really.

As the publisher of this site I’ve decided to have the last word on Boy George — perhaps bringing some closure to this wild, meandering and slightly crazy thread.
I’m a big Boy George fan. I don’t really give a rat’s ass what he talks or gossips about in his time away from the mic (though declaring Hugh Jackman’s gayness was a nice treat to read about recently) — just keep George finding his way, every now and then, back to a recording studio and I’ll be a content and happy guy.
I consider Colour By Numbers one of the finest, most spectacular pop albums of all time. Truly. A special record that can only be compared to the best of what Motown had to offer in the late 60s and early 70s. And that’s saying a lot.
I’m certain many music critics would agree with me on that mention, though we’d probably come to punches over George’s brilliant solo album — a record that I recommend and gift, often, still, 13 years later — the bubbling, deep house funk zone: The Martyr Mantras. If you’re a Boy George fan, from his Culture Club days, and you’ve avoided Mantras because of the shitty reviews it received when first released, forget all that and get a copy of this album — now. It’s amazing. You won’t be disappointed. Funny, as I was playing it all this afternoon while driving around Seattle.
