The crowd booing when Mitt Romney said Don’t Ask Don’t Tell is open for consideration is even more telling than what any of the candidates say.
This is kind of sad for Anderson Cooper, who doesn’t talk about it much but people in the industry know that he is gay. He doesn’t say anything about it citing a need for journalistic neutrality. You can see why he wanted to press the issue a little.
Most men and woman come from a conservative judaeo christian household!? What the flying fuck does that have to do with who should be allowed to serve or not? This reeks of theocracy.

For crying out loud, I think this is an outright insult to the military, non-gay personnel that the US has. It would seem, from what I keep seeing (and by that I mean things like this), that the politicians and higher-ranked (that is to say, the real in-charge) military people feel that the soldiers that defend their country, soldiers so highly praised and trained by what they say is the best military in the world, are not professional enough, do not have enough discipline, to serve alongside openly homosexual people without it affecting their duties.
I personally feel that this says more about either a) the opinions politicians etc have of the many soldiers (who do deserve respect, I will not deny that), or b) the ‘best’ training methods in the military. Because if the soldiers can’t handle it, they’ve got some discipline issues to train on…
What a hypocritic crock of cr**! I agree with Athildur: these Repubs have very little respect for the (potential) open-mindedness of the hetero guys and gals on the job, in the field or wherever. Do they think the gays are going to seduce the straights? And besides, if you can be openly gay (and also proud of it) you’re not subject to blackmail attempts which many closted gays are afraid of. How could one of us even consider voting for one of these guys for President?
Gays in the Military: On the one hand, I get why young straight guys feel threatened: they think ‘Gay’, they picture the flaming stereotype. On the other hand…these are supposed to be big, tough soldiers trained to fight and die for our country, and they’re afraid of someone seeing their dick in the shower? Get over it! As to the polticians, it’s shame we only have these gutless wonders to choose from.

I don’t mean it to sound glib at all, but since the subject of race/class has been broached, I’ve come to realize that Gays and Mexicans are the new Blacks.
The Republican Party can’t really get away with its open persecution of blacks anymore as it’s target of hysteria, so like any elitist group in need of a catch-all enemy, it needs to move on to a new minority in order to stay current and still seem “compassionate” (sure).
The very idea that a college girls’ basketball team made of young black women would be cast as hardened tramps drew jeers; you can however claim that gays and illegal immigrants are out to destroy American with the most drawn-out and micro-managed strategy imaginable (Jobs! And Marriage!) and still be considered a mainstream presidential candidate.
I think in the future America’s new hated class may be Albinos, Conjoined Twins or the Mole Men.
We, the Dutch, are managing pretty well in keeping our army a ‘happy’ place for all who like to protect us and other nice people from bad puppies. Generally I see the military as a bunch of guys that never got over playing war in their childhoods, seen the fact that our troops cried out in anger when their team was named “unicorn,” potentially gay, they said. Well boohoo, get a life… bunch of pussies.
I bet the gay guys in the military thought it was funny, I’d have laughed my balls off. And really, who is the problem here? Is it the gays, or is it the mentally weak, backward, scapegoating, neo-fascist religious mass which thinks homosexuals should be stoned to death, that makes this such a hard subject? I say the problem is that these “conservatives” are the problem, because they are in greater number. The only solution is to separate the troops in “fascist religionists” and “other” and use the first category as human shield, after all, that’s what our ancestors used to do. It’s a win-win situation: the fascists die in a conservative manner, and with all those gone the great American army can now be a happy place.
There is no way I’m going in the army by the way, even though I think it’d be totally hot and so incredibly cool: I am an adult, and playing war with my buddies stopped when I reached the age of 12/13. And I don’t like being shouted at, so bye bye demonic drill sergeants. Go shout at your conservatives: I bet they’d like some nasty talk.
