Fitting that after Nightcharm’s spirituality article you post a picture of Jesus as a 23-year-old.

Except… Jesus was Jewish, so he shouldn’t be uncut. And my God, apparently this picture takes place after the Samaritan woman anointed him with oil or else Jesus soaks his cock in vaseline six hours a day.

  2. Juan remarks:

This counts as “Maximo Latino?” This guy is WHITE. Blanco!

I hate how vague these ethnonyms are. We had “hispanic” for people of Spanish-speaking origin living in America, except for the fact that Mexico, Cuba, Spain, and Puerto Rico are countries/places, not races, and black white people live there too. A huge proportion of Mexico is actually white, often forgotten for the fact that the white people there are more wealthy, poor people want to come to the U.S., so most of our immigrants are brown.

So we came up with “Latino” instead, so we could use a racial rather than national caracteristic (because the topic comes up when we’re talking about race). And suddenly Latino is applying to everyone across “Latin America” which includes pretty white Brazil and very, very white Argentina.

How do you talk about things like white privilege or racism in a pan-American way when there is no definition for white/nonwhite of North American origin that spans the countries? I just wanna freakin word for it already!

  3. Joe remarks:

In fact the only true Latins are Italians. The Latin language, culture, and tribes originated and devoloped in ancient Rome, Italy and by Julius Ceaser, Pompeii, and the Vatican and Latin then became the classical language of Western Europe. Not meaning to sound bigoted but it baffles me how the Latin designation and now the corrupted version of Latino has literally been taken over by Spanish and to a lesser extent Portugese speaking peoples mainly of the Western Hemisphere when most of them are a mixture of races especially within the past few decades when all the while Latin is the historical and cultural legacy of Italy for over 2000 years. And how is it that nowadays Latin is not considered white when its origins are from Europe.

  4. Sam remarks:

Sebastian is from Argentina, and he is fair skinned because of the mix of european blood. But he is latin because that describes a culture, which would suggest a separate language/music/food/sports etc specific to the culture. I think the word is less about race, although race certainly is part of it.

I’m sure he would be offended that you used the word blanco in a derogatory “white priviledge” manner. Sebastian could just as easily be Turkish, as I have known Turks with his specific appearance as well, and Turks are very nationalistic and would consider themselves very different from Latins and white europeans and european-heritage americans.

Racism is alive and well but so is so-called reverse racism, which is not reverse at all, it’s just good old fashioned bigotry and separatism.

I’m sure Nightcharm would prefer you pay more attention to the splendid form before you, rather than the my-team-first politics rattling around in your head.

  5. Matt remarks:

^Okay let me get this right, Sam:

Somebody laments the fact that his own race of people, brown-skinned people from Latin America, don’t have a name for their own race. They don’t have a name because every possible name for it… latino, hispanic, Mexican Brazilian Puerto Rican… are all applied regardless of race, to white people as well.

And you call that “reverse racism” and point it out as an example of “separatism?”

I think this little exchange – which would be brilliant material for a sociology course – is a microcosm for how the only real-world application of the term “reverse racism” is to marginalize nonwhite people when they try to solve problems they face as a group.

Trust that when the bigots spot a Mexican they want to pester, they know they are seeing a brown-skinned nonwhite person. They don’t care if there isn’t a word for it. But it’s also really hard to talk about what just happened without a name for your skin-color or ethnic identity. Wanting a group identity label is “my-team-first” politics? What the fuck!

(Also, “white privelege” is not derrogatory. I am white. I have white privelege because racism is one thing I don’t have to think about. That’s not an insult, it’s something we should all own up to.)

  6. Sam remarks:

Lamenting? Problem Solving? Interesting words, almost makes the prejudice sound respectable. No doubt I seemed to have iritated you with my post Matt. This is not the forum for it, but suffice it to say that my full blooded cuban-american sister-in-law who came to this country when she was 4, would be more than a little surprised at the notion she’s not a latina because she’s not dark-skinned.

  7. Matt remarks:

Dude, this isn’t about what the definition of “Latino” is, and I don’t care if you’re the U.S. ambassador to every country south of Texas. Neither the original post, nor I, insisted that light-skinned people may not call themselves Latino.

Maybe it’s because of my involvement in a lot of conversations about race through my college years, and my friendship with a lot of nonwhite people, including very politically-active latinos. But when I read that comment, I don’t read anything even vaguely assaulting to white people. I see: “why isn’t there a word for my ethnicity?” In my own circle of friends, many of whom are hispanic, “latino” is an ethnic definition that functions alongside “black” and “white.”

The boundaries between ethnic groups are acknowledgedly vague. The president of the NAACP could pass as being Dutch if he wanted, I’m not gonna step up and say he shouldn’t call himself black. Valerie Jarrett would have been an “african-american” senator from Illinois and she has lighter skin than I do. Ward Churchill called himself Lakota – even though he is not, by blood, Lakota – and I was one of the people who just shrugged and said it isn’t my place to define those boundaries.

But in my circle of friends, the only reason we bother with definitions of race is when we’re talking about racism. Race itself is a social construction. There is no “black gene” or “white gene;” it would be, for example, impossible to definitively determine someone’s race by a blood test. But if somebody tells you to leave the country because you are, say, Mexican (I use that example because one of my friends was recently subject of a random rant from a stranger about how her “people” were ruining America) we like to call that “racist.” So we need a definition of race for it to work.

It would be easier to discuss that if she had a race. But she doesn’t have one, because though we, in my circle of friends, call her “Mexican” as a nationality and “Latino” as a race, Latino is not actually a race. If I moved to Argentina, even I would apparently become Latino after I naturalize, or at least my kids would be, because I would identify with Latin America though I am totally European.

Similarly, I don’t think our large uncut Argentinian friend from the Nightcharm article would be assaulted by some white-supremacist douchebag the way my brown-skinned friend was. Whether he is “latino” or not, he is white, because those aren’t mutually-exclusive definitions. That’s not offensive to say.

And I just don’t know how pointing out that there are linguistic issues – albeit with some playful jargon – is “reverse racism.”

Can you really take a hard look at that whole comment and still think there’s something wrong with what he said?

  8. Sam remarks:

I think you’re very confused. The original post was about skin color. To quote the objection: “This counts as “Maximo Latino?” This guy is WHITE. Blanco!” He further commented that the term latino, in his mind previously a strict racial term, was “suddenly” being used to describe “everyone across Latin America which includes…(white) Argentina.”

    What’s ambiguous about that?

This is a porn blog, not a sociology class, and Juan has every right to prefer his lovers dark-skinned, and who knows perhaps having other specific physical characterics as well. It’s about desire. However, my eyebrows did raise at the suggestion that latino was an inappropriate term for the subject, and interjection of the concepts of white privilege or racism, where they clearly don’t apply.

In addition, you unfortunately have mixed up and confused together terms such as genes and blood type, which are entirely different concepts.

  14. Manuel Vincenzo remarks:

I’d rather be looking at my countryman Sebastián or even fishing, but got caught in this interesting discussion. The difficulty in finding appropriate and useful definitions for race and ethnicity is universal, not only existential to United-States-Americans (I happen to live in the American Continent as well). Racism is everywhere.

I find Juan’s remarks pretty racist. They suggest that in the U.S. a white Argentinian (whatever that means) is not 100% “Latino” but a brown Mexican immigrant is? Maybe we should come up with a “Latin-ness” index to define which race, ethnicity or country in Latin America scores the highest? Sebastián is Argentinian, period. And the term Latin does not relate exclusively to ancient Rome or Italian culture. In general, it relates to people or countries using Romance languages. Besides Spanish and Portuguese, Romanian, French, and Italian are Romance languages (including their dialects). More specifically, it relates to people or countries of Latin America.

Those remarks are also based on false assumptions. Neither Brazil is “white”, nor Argentina is “very, very white” by any means. This is an approximate racial/ethnic composition of Argentina (self-declared)
    European descent or white: 86.7%
    Mestizo: 8%
    Amerindian: 1.6%
    Other: 4%

Many of those in the white category actually have some Amerindian ancestry. A genetic study found that 56% of the population have at least one Amerindian ancestor and 10% have Amerindian ancestry in both parental lineages. This feature does not necessarily reflect in any visible physical trait. So, yes, Sebastían may very well be part Amerindian (the mix might even explain the shiny cock, who knows).

Brazil has the largest population of Black origin outside Africa, and nearly half of the population is “Pardo” or brown, a mixture of European, Black, and Amerindian. Based on DNA studies, most Brazilians have a mixed-race origin, although a fairly large share of the population doesn’t identify with that group.

Without crying. With love, from Argentina.

  16. Juan remarks:

I made the original comment. I had to come back and say this. I appreciate the one who defended me and am surprised to see so much animosity from the others, but you all made a false assumption, so let me explain.

I am white. I have Mexican ancestry; mother was born in Mexico – came here at a young age – my father is German but that side of the family has been in the US for a hundred years. I have always identified as white. I have blonde hair and blue eyes. I don’t speak Spanish. I went to a private school. My mother is also white, and has brown hair and blue eyes. She speaks Spanish fluently since she was born in Mexico. I have been there on trips but never stayed long.

My mother’s maiden name is Salazar, and they were in Mexico for generations. She says her family used to be racist against brown-skinned people in Mexico and most of them were servants for the white Mexicans. They’d look down on them the same way Americans have look down on brown-skinned people, although my mom has said race wasn’t quite as big a deal in Mexico as it is north of the border.

I do not identify as “Latino.” I am German and Mexican, not Latino. All my life, I thought of “Latino” as meaning a dark-skinned Mexican person, until I got to college and nobody used consistent labels for anything. My Mexican family is originally European. For me “Latino” has always been a word I use with respect to brown-skinned people, and I use the term very respectfully.

In Latin America, “blanco” is not an offensive term, it just means “white,” or that is my understanding from my mom. I did not mean it as an insult! But I don’t know much Spanish so perhaps I didn’t understand everything.

I think that most of you would be less hard on me if you knew I was a white person trying to defend Latinos. It’s ironic because the content of what I say would be unchanged by my race! I have never been called out in person as racist when I say derogatory toward white people because they can see that I am white and just joking, and if I tell jokes about Mexicans they let me get away with it too. In my experience white people are a lot more sensitive about racism against them than other groups, which is ironic because we are the ones who have the most power.

My mom’s brother married a dark-skinned woman and had children who are mixed race. People see their skin and notice that they still have a Mexican name and call the kids illegal immigrants (even though they were born in the U.S. and speak perfect English). But I have never heard a racist word for anyone because my skin color is different. It’s very interesting. As the above commenter said, race does not exist in the real world, its a social construction, and I think he’s right when he says the only use for it is when it comes to talking about how people are treated. My mom has her accent but people think she’s from Europe and they treat her well. They usually think she’s Italian! My brown-skinned family members’ experiences are harder than mine. Skin color does matter when it comes to how people treat you, and that’s why I think it’s worth talking about.

I think it’s funny how matt pointed out that the issue was there not being a term for the race of people from latin america, and everybody responded to him by reiterating that “latino” is not a race term. lol. That was exactly what he was saying. That was exactly what juan was saying. you thought you were arguing against the point but you are proving it right. !! even i can see that.

Juan’s latest comment I think shows the miscommunication, but nobody responded to that anymore (too embarrassed?)

But I think there is a term for “brown-skinned” people from latin america: “mestizo.”

  20. Manuel Vincenzo remarks:

To Anonymous: what Matt pointed out was answered in my previous post, but perhaps I didn’t make myself clear enough. The point I made was: there should not exist a race term for all Latin Americans living in the US as “Latinos” because: 1) There are similarities between countries but we’re also kinda different, Argentina is located pretty far from the Dominican Republic and their people look, dress, dance and speak differently than us; 2) We do have socially constructed ethnicities of our own! The main ones are: Amerindians, Black Africans, White or Caucasians (of European descent), Mestizos (intermix between any of the previous three), which includes Mulatos (European and African descent) and Zambos (Amerindian and African). Finally, a significant number of East Asians (the majority from Japan, China and Korea) live in Latin America.

Take my case, for instance. My ancestors came from Spain and Italy in the early 1900s and married within the same ethnic group, so I am considered White. But it doesn’t really matters, for most purposes in this country I am Argentinian. Neither Spanish, nor Italian. Now, the minute I enter the US, my race switches to “Latino”, my skin becomes darker, I suddenly start saying “Ay papi!” and eating beans all the time (not that there’s anything wrong with that). Quoting Matt: “What the fuck!”

It was very surprising to hear United-Staters saying “I’m Italian” or “I’m Irish” (the white ones, of course) as Juan’s case who considers himself German and Mexican. I’m aware how touchy racial issues are over there and think embracing your heritage is quite terrific, but don’t you think is taken to a point that exarcebates the differences and doesn’t help to build national pride?
Because the (in)famous phrase: “Don’t shoot me, I’m an American”, does have the word American in it, but I doubt that’s the right attitude.

All countries have identity issues (persons have them all the time, so not a big surprise) and the ones in the US are definitely complex. But they’re yours. I am Argentinian. Wherever I go.
