K.C. Belongs To Me

I've just added "What are you doing living THERE?" to my list of email content I won't answer. It ranks right up there with classic one-lined email "Got pics?" or "Stats?" I get really tired of the coastal mentality that nothing ever happens in the Midwest or that anyone with any sort of personality would dare live here. I'll tell you right now that I've had a killer summer already. We've had some really decent shows here. Summer is when Kansas City's music scene comes alive. It's too bad that it's coming to a close.

Over Memorial Weekend, there was an amazing lineup of skinhead and punk bands for the first ever "Streetpunk" show. It was hosted in part by American Upstart, the world's premier skinhead zine. Fuck, I should do infomercials! Seriously now, I had the best damned time. My best mate and I hosted 12 queer punks and skinheads for beer, BBQ, bonding at our house and lots and lots of punk rock music at the show. Besides one guest's minor personality flaws gushing to the surface, fun was had by all. The lineup included The Wretched Ones, Beerzone, NOTA, Lower Class Brats, Brass Tacks, The Cuffs, Patriot, Disorderly Conduct, Fat Skins, Rat Bastards, Kelly's Heroes, Ultraman, Sister Mary Rotten Crotch, The Main Street Saints, and Tanka Ray. Now tell me Coastal Snobs, did Streetpunk '99 come to your town? I think not, pansy-ass.

Many of us punks and skins of the "bent" kind keep in touch through email and a loose fraternal organization called Q.S.B. Now before you all run out and start calling yourselves skinheads, the Queer Skinhead Brotherhood is not a fetish group. It's mainly a network made up of punks and skinheads who want to collect in a scene that isn't always nice to homos. Many of us travel great distances to meet or hang out with one another and go to shows. I'm glad my friends could make it here to enjoy themselves.

The Social Chaos tour came to Lawrence, Kansas - a town just about 40 minutes from Kansas City. This one I went to by myself because all my friends were in their respective cities doing other things or waiting for the tour to swing their way. This was also another amazing lineup of bands, from punk to oi! The highlights of the weekend were running into an old gal pal of mine I used to work with, getting to catch up with somebody I knew years ago, who now fronts Sister Mary Rotten Crotch, and seeing Becki Bondage up on stage singing "Stand Strong, Stand Proud" with her band Vice Squad.

During the band Chelsea's set, two skinheads were right at the front of the stage. I had just got finished watching Velvet Goldmine the week prior, so what transpired was even more funny to me. There was a huge, fat skin and then there was this well-built one. They were friends, I suppose. I have seen the big one at other shows. The well-built one would wiggle around and try to slam in the pit and come back to his mate's side. The lead singer of Chelsea would grind his crotch (oh so close!) to the big skinhead's face. I was cracking up! I thought there would be a fight for sure, but they got freaked out and walked away to get a beer.

So where's all the torrid sex you're used to me pouring forth? There was sex during the Memorial Weekend... believe me. Do you think we're a bunch of nuns? We're guys, for cryin' out loud! Several of us paired off for play. Some got some, some got none. That's all you are getting this time. You'll just have to assume the best and let your mind do some work for a change.
